Swinburne Biotechnology Field Trip--Beach Sample collection

Hello everyone~~~~

Last week we went to a hypermarket to learn science
and now

we are heading to a beach for Sample collection
i know it might sound a but absurd
but yes..this is part of our subject and you might fail for not going~!!!!

Destination: Pasir PanJang
Traveling time: 45minutes from Swinburne
This a roughly were it is located..hmmm
not really a helpful picture  i suppose
try to google youself~~wahaha
Coordinates: 1°41'42"N   110°18'31"E

So, first of all
we had to squeeze into a small bus to reach the destination...science is never an easy job..
Dont worry, this bus is still air conditioned
with the mean temperature of about 30 degree Celsius inside the bus..........
= =

Now for the nice part~~~
my Favorite photo~~~a small plant thriving under shades

A view of the always Famous Pasir panjang

Sometime got stuck inside the sand~~~yap, is a coconut
The Rock~!!!!
And another plant growing in the middle of the beach
Rocky beach~~`mostly a result of volcanic eruption thousand years ago
Resting under a shady trees after a tedious work done~
Feets after sample collection
A last view of Pasir Panjang before we headed back~~~
As always..Lab analysis for Oil digesting and Bio-luminescent bacteria

Result might be up next week~~stay tune~!

See you next time

Biotechnology Road Show~!

Light are on and films are rolling
Thats a start for Swinburne road show~!!!

Last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Swinburne Sarawak came out with a advertising road show in Spring shopping mall. As always, the school of science were involved.

The basic theme of the show was the technology that were involved in the famous TV series CSI: crime scene investigation.

this involved things like  DNA extraction, and polymerase chain reaction.
the picture below shows the basic setup of the tools needed for THE analysis.

And also, microscopic slide were introduced. a smoker's lung slide and a healthy lung slide were placed to educate the public that it was never a good habit to smoke.

Dissecting microscope ~~basically they have an magnification of .8-3.5x on the objective lens where and 10x magnification on the eye pieces.

Another dissecting microscope with a dead butterfly as the specimen.

The picture below shows a head of a dragon fly.

Next, we also have an array of colorful transition metal salt for display~

A few packs of Lanolin for hand cream making~they were wrapped into a candy for easy transportation.

The lanolin above is then mixed into one of the beakers below and two phases were mixed with a chopstick violently.

and poof~! that's an home made hand cream
You can actually made these hand-cream if  you had things like paraffin, glycerol and cetyl-alcohol.
just leave a comment if you need the recipe
and that's hand cream floating on a cloud on a hot pan~

samples to be given as souvenir.

used beakers~~with left-over hand cream~~

Dry ice were also show in the road show as they attracted a hell lot of people~!
And lastly, a biotech student posting at the stall

can also visit her blog: http://juliahosingfang.blogspot.com/
ok everyone~~bye for now
and hi for next time~!

hope you Enjoy~~~~
